This pains me so. That's where lectio divina comes in.
Lectio divina is a spirituality development practice that I have had to do as an assignment in a few of my classes. It is a Latin phrase which means "divine reading", and the way that I've been trained in it is reading a passage of scripture a few times with pauses in between and then letting it draw something out of you.
The drawing out part is the most difficult for me because it requires me to become vulnerable to the scriptures. I have to allow the scriptures to speak to me instead of my preconceived notions telling the scriptures what they are saying. For someone who was once all heart and not much head, this is tough to recognize that I'm all head and very little heart.
Now because I'm mostly a thinker and not much of a feeler, I needed a systematic way of approaching this practice. There are two options that I've considered (Vanderbilt's Revised Common Lectionary resource or EWTN's daily mass readings), and I think I've settled on Vandy's page. I can take the readings of the week and do one per day. This has the added benefit of helping me prepare for the following Sunday worship which my sermons are based off of the RCL.
As I embark on this journey of becoming vulnerable to God and to my heart, I'm always open for ideas from others. What are you doing for spiritual development?
